Definitions

“Basic Trainee” is a doctor undertaking the first stage of RACP physician training to build broad experience in internal medicine or paediatrics. This stage usually lasts three years and must be completed, including written and clinical exams, before progressing to Advanced Training.

“Advanced Trainee” is a doctor who has completed Basic Training and is undertaking specialist training in a chosen field of medicine. This stage develops in-depth expertise over about three years and leads to eligibility for Fellowship of the RACP (FRACP).
